The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental, non-profit organisation founded in 1956 that works in more than 30 countries throughout the world. DRC fulfils its mandate by providing direct assistance to conflict-affected populations – refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs) and host communities in the conflict areas of the world; and by advocating on behalf of conflict-affected populations internationally, and in Denmark, on the basis of humanitarian principles and the Human Rights Declaration. The Danish Demining Group (DDG) is the demining unit within the Danish Refugee Council.

We understand "durable solutions" as any means by which the situation of refugees can be permanently and satisfactorily resolved, enabling them to live normal lives.

Danish Refugee Council - Lebanon

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental, non-profit organziation founded in 1956 that works in more than 30 countries throughout the world. The Danish Refugee Council has been operating in Lebanon since September 2004. The focus of the organization has shifted over time as the country’s needs changed. DRC’s main focus in Lebanon is on providing emergency assistance to refugees from Syria, and on developing the capacities of hosting communities across Lebanon. The emergency response program focuses on four sectors of intervention: Protection, Direct Assistance, Shelter/Collective Site Management and Coordination, and Community Empowerment and Livelihoods. In parallel, the organization’s Development Programme works with Migrant Domestic Workers and Women at Risk.

Danish Refugee Council - Myanmar

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has been operational in Myanmar since 2009, responding initially to post-Nargis needs in the Ayeyarwaddy Division. In 2012, DRC broadened its presence and programmatic outreach by merging with the Danish Demining Group (DDG). DRC Myanmar currently operates in three of Myanmar’s seven states: Kachin, Kayah and Rakhine and, having recently extended its MOU with the Ministry of Social Welfare until the end of 2017, will soon commence activities in Kayin State. In Kayah State, DRC’s programme focuses on providing support to poor and vulnerable conflict–affected persons, including IDPs, returnees and host communities, both via direct implementation and local partnerships. By fostering trust amongst local populations, engaging all relevant stakeholders in planning processes, and by proactively participating in cross-border coordination mechanisms to ensure activities are conceptually linked to the refugee situation in Thailand, DRC adopts a conflict sensitive approach to its programming. DRC (together with DDG) is delivering a Community-Driven Safety and Development (CDSD) programme in several communities and townships in Kayah State. The CDSD programme works with conflict-affected communities to identify their priority needs through a participatory Community Action Plan process with support for identified needs provided through project funding. An integral element of the CDSD is small-scale community infrastructure activities which can include provision or improvement of water supply systems, improvements to roads infrastructure to support market and agricultural access, construction of multi-purpose community recreation centres to support community development activities. DRC implements these infrastructure activities in a participatory way with communities contributing some labour and materials to enhance community ownership and sustainability of the projects. Provision of community infrastructure is seen as a key element of community development to support conflict-affected communities in the south-east of Myanmar. Another element of the CDSD approach is the participatory process of identifying vulnerable individuals within the communities. When individuals with special needs are identified and selected, DRC delivers tailor made solutions through either Individual Protection Assistance (IPA) or through livelihood support. Due to the landmine contamination across the South-East, DRC/DDG sees Humanitarian Mine Action as an important element in obtaining durable solutions, and for preparing eventual returns in the area. Mine Risk Awareness is therefore an integrated part of CDSD, and DRC/DDG has been conducting, and will continue to conduct, Mine Risk Education through both direct implementation and with partners in Kayah State.
