Operational Overview
The Republic of Burundi has had a long history of generosity in welcoming people forced to flee.
Burundi continues to host over 85,000 refugees and asylum seekers, predominantly from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, many of whom are in a protracted displacement situation, and with limited durable solutions prospects. Nearly 40% of the refugee population resides in urban areas, while the majority are hosted in five camps located in the eastern and northeastern regions of the country.
UNHCR supports the Government to provide assistance and protection for the population of concern, including refugees, and promotes their inclusion in national systems, enhancing their self-sufficiency, and supporting their attainment of durable solutions.
In addition, UNHCR has supported the repatriation of over 185,000 Burundian refugee returnees since September 2017 from Tanzania, Rwanda, the DRC, Uganda and Kenya.
The Agency works primarily with the Ministry of Interior, Community Development and Public Security, its line ministry in Burundi and maintains partnerships critical to effective operations with other Government Ministries, including the Education Ministry, Public Health Ministry and Social Affairs Ministry as well as NGO partners.
UNHCR works closely with other UN agencies through the United Nations Strategic Development Cooperation Framework Plan (UNSDCF).
